The 12th grade Student of the Month for February is Ofelia Eumana. Ofelia was born in Brooklyn and she loves the City of New York. She could not imagine living anywhere else. She enjoys painting, cooking (she makes amazing empanadas), and reading. She is very interested in astronomy and finds the universe fascinating. Her favorite color is pink and she loves dark chocolate. Ofelia aspires to go to college in order to be a nurse.
Ofelia’s favorite teacher is Ms. Basilio, who was her mathematics teacher during her sophomore and junior years. Ofelia believes that her understanding of mathematics would be limited if it were not for Ms. Basilio’s patience. Ofelia notes, “when it comes down to teaching, Ms. Basilio’s methods are effective. She is dedicated and thoughtful. She cares about us. Not only do I admire her as a teacher but also as a human being.”
The teachers at WHSAD chose Ofelia to be the student of the month because she is officially our first graduate with not only an Advanced Regents Diploma (having passed additional Regents examinations and taking on additional classes, such as Physics), but also a diploma with a Career in Technical Education (CTE) endorsement. When given this information, Ofelia was surprised of her academic accomplishments. Always a perfectionist, she strives to be respectful towards her teachers and peers.
The following video shows Ofelia’s recent presentation in her Advanced CAD class. This presentation highlights Ofelia’s lamp project, where she conceptualized and designed a lamp using AutoCAD, which was eventually printed using WHSAD’s state-of-the-art 3D printer.
