Senior ELA Announcements: STUDY

May 6, 2013 By Mr. D'Amato

Tomorrow there will be a vocabulary quiz from our work with George Orwell’s 1984. Here are some major points that will help you between now and then:

  • STUDY
  • STUDY
  • STUDY

Also, remember that most of our daily Aims have been devoted in one way or another to the vocabulary. Try using word-association methods of studying by relating it back to the Aims. (For Example, indoctrination to orthodoxy through education).

If you do not have the words, here they are:

—Orthodoxy: Generally accepted theory , doctrine, or practice
—Totalitarianism: form of government where the ruler is the absolute dictator (Big Brother, Hitler, Joseph Stalin)
—Indoctrination: teaching or exposing someone to accept certain ideas without criticism
—Propaganda: information, especially biased or misleading, used to promote a certain point of view (Big Brother is Watching You)
—Ideology: the system of ideas used by a group, social class or individual
—Slogans: phrases used repeatedly to be memorized
—Socialism: a political and social theory where production, distribution, and exchange is completely regulated by the government
—Doctrine: a set of beliefs taught by a group
Doublethink: to believe two opposite ideas at the same time (example: Freedom is Slavery, War is Peace, Ignorance is Strength)
Reality: a thing that is actually experienced or seen (Remember Plato’s allegory)
I would wish you all luck if luck had anything to do with studying. So, I wish you a studious evening and a prosperous examination. If anybody needs help studying, I will be in my office first period tomorrow at 8:20.
