WHSAD’s students designed and built their own lamps using hand tools in our art studio. The goal was to create aesthetically pleasing designs that were also functional. The ability to complete such a project is essential to a future career as an architect.
As part of the Artists as Researchers and Educators series, The Pratt Institute will be highlighting designs created in WHSAD’s 11th grade Architectural Preservation class taught by Ms. Moos and Mr. O’Brien. Called Visual Inquiry and Representation, this art installation is a celebration of the fusion of form and function. As aesthetics and design are an integral part of the architecture industry, the role of arts education plays a primary role in WHSAD’s four year architecture sequence. Our students are consistently challenged by our art teachers, who team teach with our career and technical teachers to inspire the creation of designs that are both functional and pleasing to the eye. For the project chosen for this show, WHSAD students were challenged to design and build lamps out of wood. These designs were assessed on both their functionality and uniqueness of design.
In describing this project, Ms. Moos stated that, “Students of the 11th grade at the Williamsburg High School for Architecture and Design created the prototypes following an inquiry into lamp design. The essential question for this teaching unit asked students what processes designers use to develop and realize ideas and how designers communicate ideas. Students were introduced to a design process, which utilized 2d and 3d explorations to develop and realize ideas. The initial design process included gesture drawings, collaged schematic diagrams and scaled models. The students chose one of their ideas and extended the design process in a set of construction drawings creating a top view, side views and detail sketches. In this phase of the design process students reinforced the design concept and begin to translate it into a prototype.”
