Unit 1 – Structure
Last week we began working on our 1st unit on structure, which explores how buildings stand up. On our first day we explored how paper can be manipulated. We then developed ideas for the structure of a shelter( a shelter being something which protects us from the elements). Every structure needs a framework. Students had to identify the necessary frameworks for their design and began to create schematic models ( 1st phase in a design process) of their design. During the model building process many changes will be made to the original design idea. As they went through this process, students began to understand the complexity of structural design. Student feedback included comments such as, “I did not realize how many support systems my design needs” and “I changed my design from being solid to transparent to show my framework.”
