During the summer of 2015, three WHSAD students, Carlos Cuadrado ’16, Alyson Montesdeoca ’17, and Ashby Rivera ’16, spent six weeks interning with PortSideNY, a not-for-profit organization restoring the Mary A. Whalen oil tanker. The students worked along side professionals to restore features of the historic ship, while also learning about the maritime history of the ship and of Brooklyn.
WHSAD students first volunteered on the Mary A. Whalen in April 2015 for a tw0-day Field School; following that experience, PortSideNY interviewed a dozen students, from whom they selected their three interns.
