Architectural Grille is an extracurricular program offered at WHSAD for all students who are interested in design and using AutoCAD. Students work on elaborate and meticulously designed grilles in AutoCAD and then get to see their own designs become a physical object. This is all possible through our collaboration with the team over at Architectural Grille as they not only help us realize the physical limitations of our designs but they also print our designs in house onto sheets of metal.
One of the biggest attractions that students have to Architectural Grille is the relation that the program has to the real world. Students get the chance to experience what it is like not only to work on a team but also to have strict deadlines and constant tasks to be completed. While it may sound overwhelming at first, the program is actually amazing because you get to both express your creativity through your designs and get preparation for the outside world in a calm and welcoming classroom environment.
Student creativity gets the opportunity to flow and in turn impact their designs in a beautiful way. An example of this are the “Writer Grilles” created by students. Students get to use their knowledge of both design programs like AutoCAD and Rhinoceros 5 to create anything that is both realistically possible with resources considered and within scope. Being able to have a vision for a design then being able to create it and finally see it go from a computer monitor to a physical final product, is an amazing feeling especially because of how instantaneous the process is.
