WHSAD Junior, Miguel Hernandez, wrote this article.
On Wednesday Novermber 11, Paula Wallace, president of Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) came to WHSAD to give information about the college. SCAD has four locations: Atlanta, Savannah Lacoste, France, and its online school, SCADnow. The presentation was focused on the school’s acting and architecture programs. Their Acting program is very extensive and very modern. Not only that, but when you’re majoring in acting, you are actively being looked up for professional casting into real films and tv Production with well-known companies such as Netlfix, CBS and BET. This is the only on-site college that does this. This single opportunity could launch you into your career in acting, and the school has professors working in successful studios and networks themselves. They also told us about their fashion shows, and how they have them every year. SCAD has many mentors who assist students throughout their years of study at the school.
Those who presented highlighted the importance of collaboration. They talked about how even though you’re working on one degree, you will be branching out to other programs. Say your study is in the acting degree. You will likely be working along with programs like dramatic writing, for scripts, or maybe people in the fashion program for outfits. SCAD is really focused on teamwork. One of these ways they show teamwork and helping each other out is with SCAD squads. When joining SCAD, you choose a SCAD squad. A SCAD squad is a general club you join when first starting SCAD. Paula Wallace summarized it as “A sorority without kicking anyone”. Being in a squad is one of their ways of making them feel like a family to you. SCAD also has tons of clubs for you to join as well. There’s a club for everyone, ranging from academic ones like Analog & Digital Photo Club, to clubs for fun like Makeup Artistry Club to Cultural Clubs like ASA (African Student Association).
They also touched on their Architecture program. During your years studying, you’ll develop a resume and build up a portfolio. SCAD helps find you internships and employment, ensuring you are set up for success. Studying at SCAD as an architect means you’ll be working with real life factors such as sustainability and social issues. You will have to consider things like topographical and aesthetic factors, and you’ll use modern technology and resources such as virtual reality to develop the technical expertise in the architectural field.
I talked to fellow junior, Jesse Sanoff about a conversation he had with some of the representatives. They discussed architecture and answered some of his questions. His main question being: What kind of Architecture do you teach? They responded by saying how there wasn’t really a single kind of theme being taught. Architecture kinds can include themes like Classical, Modern, Neoclassical and Sustainable. Architecture is really about exploration and there’s no strict theme. The work and photos in the SCAD website range with many different styles.
In this photo, you can see how this building is really leaning towards sustainability. Some features that show this are the many plants, and big windows for sunlight.
This render shows a more futuristic view with the lights and spacious feeling. There are a ton more renders and student work you can find at their website SCAD.edu
