In school we learn about the community and the role each of us plays in it, yesterday I was able to be part of a project that brings together the different parts of the community. WHSAD and Greenpoint Youth Court students are lucky enough to be part of the design and planning of a Groundswell Mural. The mural was made possible because of the Greenpoint Chamber of Commerce. WHSAD has been part of the graffiti removal which has been also sponsored by the Chamber.
At the first meeting we met the people who made the mural possible Jeff Mann who is the President of the Chamber of Commerce, Elaine Brodsky the chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, and Gina Argento a Board member. They told us about the history of Greenpoint and North Brooklyn. We also learned more about Groundswell and how their murals change the community. As a native of North Brooklyn I am excited to be part of this opportunity to make a lasting impact on the community. We will be spending every Wednesday for the remainder of the school year learning about the neighborhood’s past and designing the mural. Each week I will be posting an update for whsad.org readers to let you all know what we are learning from the Groundswell Teen Empowerment Mural Apprentice Program.
