On Saturday, June 3, WHSAD seniors Autumn Gonzalez and Johnny Rodriguez attended the Newtown Creek Alliance’s Community Visioning Workshop with Riverkeeper to present their Apollo Street renderings to the community. Y-PLAN Environmental Science students first participated in the April 1st Apollo Street-End Clean-Up (see post), and then collaborated with NCA to envision and design a future Apollo Street using AutoCAD. The Newtown Creek Alliance is a community-based organization working to restore, reveal and revitalize Newtown Creek to its glory days as a local wildlife habitat. The Rohan Levy Aspiring Architect Scholarship Was Awarded To Jalen Vasquez
On Thursday, June 1st, Jalen Vasquez was awarded the 1st annual Rohan Levy Aspiring Architect Scholarship from Rohan's mother, Nadine Sylvester. Ms. Sylvester created this scholarship in memory of her late son Rohan Levy, a student at WHSAD who was fatally shot and killed in February of 2017. Rohan was an exceptional student who was attending WHSAD with aspirations of becoming an architect before his life was tragically cut short. Ms. Sylvester set up this scholarship for young men of color who have been accepted into an accredited architecture undergraduate program, have met high academic standards and have served in architecture related extra-curricular activities during their time as students at WHSAD. WHSAD Students Present Plans to Deputy Brooklyn Borough President Diana Reyna
On Friday, June 2, WHSAD students presented the final plans for the architecture studio redesign project. Earlier this year, WHSAD was awarded capital funding from the office of Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and Council-member Stephen Levin. The funds will be used to modernize two classrooms into state of the art architecture studios. Celeste Ortiz, Anamaria Jovel, Joseph Lo (past intern at the Office of Topography at Borough Hall) , and Patryk Pozarlik presented the plans for redesigned studios to Deputy Brooklyn Borough President Diana Reyna. WHSAD Seniors Participate in the Park Avenue Armory’s Manifesto Workshop
During the 2016-2017 academic year, the class of 2017 at Williamsburg High School for Architecture and Design collaborated with teaching artists from the Park Avenue Armory to create individual and group manifestos with Julian Rosenfeldt's exhibition "Manifesto" as their inspiration. The term manifesto is defined as a declaration of your core values and beliefs, what you stand for, and how you intend to live your life. It functions both as a statement of principles and as a call to action. The senior cohort was involved in the difficult challenge of making individual and group manifestos in addition to their normal amount of school work. WHSAD Students Attend A Matinee Showing of Hamilton
On Wednesday, May 10th, WHSAD Students who participated in the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History Hamilton Performance Project were given the opportunity to see a matinee showing of the hit Broadway musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Students who attended the showing worked on a six session project where they learned about the musical, Alexander Hamilton's life and then they created their own performance pieces. Students who attended the musical were excited to see the hugely popular musical. They also enjoyed an intimate Q&A with a few of the cast members of Hamilton. WHSAD Students Attend the UFT Spring Education Conference
On Saturday, May 13, students from WHSAD attended the 2017 United Federation of Teachers Spring Conference Exhibitor Instructions for CTE Schools at the Hilton Hotel in Manhattan. The purpose of the conference is to showcase the many different Career and Technical Education schools and the work students have done while attending these schools. Juniors and Seniors from WHSAD were able to display their work from each year they attended WHSAD. WHSAD Juniors Make New York State College Visits
On Thursday, April 27th, through Friday, April 28th, WHSAD junior class embarked on a trip to visit a few colleges throughout New York State. They visited Cornell University, Ithaca University, Alfred State University and Alfred University. At each college, they were given tours of the campus, explanation of all the undergraduate programs offered, and were given many opportunities to have all of their questions answered regarding attending college. WHSAD Seniors Present Y-PLAN Projects to Panel of Civic Partners
On Wednesday, April 5, four WHSAD seniors were invited to present their Y-PLAN projects at 4 World Trade Center to Y-PLAN’s panel of civic partners. Of more than twenty schools, WHSAD received the only invitation to present and to provide constructive feedback on the Y-PLAN program to an audience that included various New York City agencies. The students participated in a panel discussion on their experiences and offered insight on how the program could evolve and improve in the future. WHSAD Seniors Visit The Park Avenue Armory to See The Hairy Ape
On Wednesday April 5th, Mr. Powers, Mr. Felix and the seniors at WHSAD were on their way to The Park Avenue Armory to see Eugene O'Neill's The Hairy Ape. A week prior to the show, 30 seniors were prepped for the experience by two professional teaching artists Vicki Turner and Neil Pritchard. In this pre-show gathering, the teaching artists prepped the students by letting them freely discuss the ideas of class, social structures, and the belonging that we feel as a part of any group. The students explored these essential "hairy ape" concepts by reading lines from the play, proposing possibilities of what the concept of the play could be about, and engaging in improvisation activities. On Saturday, April 1, 2017, WHSAD seniors joined the Newtown Creek Alliance in their weekend street cleanup project on Apollo Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The students picked up and organized garbage into trash and recyclable items. Students were eager to help improve the environmental conditions of WHSAD’s community.
