WHSAD Students Use Geometry To Compute How Many Styrofoam Cups Tall Their Teacher Is

photo 1Students in Ms. Terraferma’s geometry class were faced with a challenge: to determine how many Stryofoam cups they would need to reach the top of her head. In the beginning student groups were given one cup and a ruler, the rest was up to them.  The goal of the lesson was to help foster both their problem solving skills and their ability to ask strategic (multi level) questions.  As the period progressed we used our construction skills to prove our calculations.  Answer: You need 18 8 ounce cups to reach the top of Ms. Terraferma’s head.  Challenge: How many red silo cups would that convert to?
