If I could choose one word to explain this year, I would choose, unexpected. Because that’s honestly what my experience has been. Every day was something new in the best way. And for this, I couldn’t be more grateful. Grateful for all the opportunities I have been given, and all the amazing people I have met because of these opportunities. Looking back at this year, I don’t have many regrets. This year has given me so much. This school year saw the launch of “The Column," WHSAD’s first annual school newspaper, and to the surprise of many of my peers, myself included, it was extremely successful. The outreach and intrigue created by the paper surpassed what anybody expected. It created discussion among peers, interest in activities, and … [Read more...]
Little Free Library Project with Polish Consulate
The Polish government and consul provided a grant to build Little Free Libraries to be housed in D14 schools and the Greenpoint community, with the goal of creating multilingual collections representative of the diversity of our students. This will be a collaboration of the study of the diversity and culture within the district between Pilsudski Institute, District 14 Community Schools, and WHSAD. Chandler Mclaurin-Student of the Month
My main goal in WHSAD is to stay focused and be successful by the time I graduate. This is important because it’s an independent goal I want to follow. By staying focused and saying to myself every day, "I can do this," I will achieve, and I find encouragement by reminding myself that I need to achieve this goal. I believe what makes WHSAD special is that it’s an architecture school, but it accommodates everyone and their specific goals. For example, the jobs we can get are not only architecture and design specific, but also SYEP and the community service opportunities. Also, I make the announcements for the school every morning. The school has a lot of connections that are unique and cool when it’s time for us to network. WHSAD has … [Read more...]

The program is essentially about taking students from various different backgrounds and helping them overcome many of their problems regarding public speaking in a direct way. The students in the program got to collaborate with one another and learn about how to use their voice to help in the community. Below, Emely gives insight into her experience with the program. Q: How did you get to become a Service in Schools Leader? A: So, Ms. Spaziani one day spoke to me and other groups of students during third period. She [Ms. Spaziani] wanted to tell us about … [Read more...]
BUSHWICK GENERATOR
The Bushwick Generator is a redesign driven student project in collaboration with Toby Moskovits, Heritage Equity, and Kushner Architects. Students were tasked with redesigning a space for multipurpose use and thus, in the process, go through approvals for rezoning. During this portion of the process, students focused on rezoning and all the dimensions of such a complicated endeavor. Below, several parties involved with the project give their thoughts and insight on Bushwick Generator. Mr. Codio one of the supervisors on the Bushwick Generator project said: “This is the Bushwick Generator project with the developer Toby Moskovits, Heritage Equity, and as well as Kushner Architects. The Whitney Museum
On Thursday April 4th, WHSAD Students went on a trip to the Whitney Museum of American Art. Students got to have a tour of the museum and get in-depth information on specific art pieces and installations. Students were able to view works created by renowned artists like Isamu Noguchi. A majority of the installation was very relevant and spoke about issues that many of us experience on a daily basis. There were interactive installations such as Unexpected Growth which was an AR based experience. It allowed students to use an iPad to move around the city skyline but it was submerged under the ocean. Once closely examining the experience, students could see how pollution and littering has affected the landscape of our oceans. Furthermore, … [Read more...]
WHSAD’s Brooklyn North Temple Project
The Brooklyn North Temple project is a project that was tasked upon WHSAD for the Brooklyn North Superintendent. Students were tasked with taking an image from the superintendent, and redesigning it in AutoCAD to eventually 3D print it. Students worked after hours and on weekends to finish the design in AutoCAD, 3D print it and, lastly, assemble it with lights in the columns. Mr. Codio the Senior Architecture teacher said this about the creation process of the Corinthian Temple: “From the image that we received from the superintendent we took into consideration the historical aspects of the Greek temples and the different types of temples. So we decided that the type of temple we were going to utilize was the Corinthian Temple because … [Read more...]
Architectural Grille
Architectural Grille is an extracurricular program offered at WHSAD for all students who are interested in design and using AutoCAD. Students work on elaborate and meticulously designed grilles in AutoCAD and then get to see their own designs become a physical object. This is all possible through our collaboration with the team over at Architectural Grille as they not only help us realize the physical limitations of our designs but they also print our designs in house onto sheets of metal. One of the biggest attractions that students have to Architectural Grille is the relation that the program has to the real world. Students get the chance to experience what it is like not only to work on a team but also to have strict deadlines and … [Read more...]
Van Arsdale Library Redesign
On January 5th, 2019, all of the schools in the Van Arsdale campus joined together for a good cause. Students from WHSAD, Brooklyn Prep., and Williamsburg Prep met to discuss the redesign of the V.A. library. The library as of now is outdated and has been in dire need of restoration. All the students proposals for what they wanted in a school library. Students then discussed with each other and offered valid and respectable criticism of their designs. This reflection is an essential part of any design proposal as all those involved get to each have a say in what choices will be made. This helps not only to please everyone but also to represent a wider audience in the design of the library. Mr. Codio, WHSAD's Senior Architecture … [Read more...]
Students Visit City College for a Final Architectural Review
On Friday, December 14th WHSAD students attended a final architectural review at the City College of New York. The architectural review was for the master's course offered at the school. The students presenting their year's worth of research were under review and watch by a panel of people. The review was interesting for many reasons, one being how the trip as a whole exposed students to this new part of architecture in a learning-based environment, with which many of us had not been familiar. This exposure was good for those students who are especially interested in applying to architectural colleges and or programs in the future. We got to experience what it’s like not only to present a final review but also what it’s like to review … [Read more...]
