As the onsite Woodworking class at Makeville studio (located in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn) comes to an end, WHSAD students who participated celebrate their hard work with their family and friends. This class was designed for beginners with little to no woodworking experience. This eight-session class included classes and workshops on wood physics, shop safety and etiquette, an introduction to joinery concepts, and hands-on experience with both hand tools and machinery. Makeville Studio- WHSAD Intro to Woodworking
We are pleased to announce the launch of the WHSAD / Powerhouse partnership with our March, 2016 pilot program. This course will take place at the Makeville studio on site at the Gowanus Canal. In this 8 week course, WHSAD students will use a variety of common woodworking techniques to construct a side table. Through the process of building the table, students will develop technical skills and a basic understanding of construction and joinery methods used in furniture projects. Students will discuss wood movement and anatomy, as well as selecting the right wood for various design projects. A group of student officers attended the 50th anniversary of SkillsUSA’s fall leadership conference. During the conference the students engaged in workshops that improved their leadership skills in the workforce. Angel Pasan – Class of 2015
Angel Pasan, WHSAD Class of 2015, currently attends New York University (NYU) where he is majoring in Electrical Engineering. “WHSAD gave me the skills to discover and to follow my dreams. From College Now to Co-op Tech, the opportunities and experiences offered through WHSAD were invaluable. Teachers at WHSAD were always willing to lend a helping hand. With the help of all of the staff at WHSAD, I was able to get accepted into NYU and major in Electrical Engineering. The two subject classes that helped me out the most were the AutoCAD classes , which gave me a tool to design anything I had a passion for, and the math classes which created a foundation for all of the math that I am taking now in college. WHSAD Students Tour The Grand Central Terminal
On October 28th, a group of students attended a tour at one of New York City's most prominent landmark, The Grand Central Terminal, which is located on 42nd street and Park avenue. The tour was hosted by the Worlds Monument Fund and guided by Frank Prial from Beyer Blinder Belle Architects & planners LLP, who has been working on the terminal's restoration and redesign efforts for over two decades. Frank has been giving tour guides to WHSAD students for the past few years, highlighting the terminals architectural features and its major contributions to the growth of New York City as a transportation hub. Mr. Harris – Class of 2010
Mr. Jamin Harris, WHSAD Class of 2010, graduated from Saint Francis College with a Bachelor of Arts in Adolescence Education. Mr. Harris currently teaches History and AP Human Geography at Williamsburg High School for Architecture and Design. “ The years I spent at WHSAD as a student was an experience I can never forget. AIA Scholarship Awarded to WHSAD Student Ashly Cabrera
The AIA (American Institute of Architects) and the Center for Architecture honored WHSAD senior Ashly Cabrera with a scholarship to further her design studies in college. Ashly was chosen to receive this award in recognition of her significant academic achievements. Ashly and WHSAD were chosen for recognition by Jed Walentas, owner of Two Trees Management, who has been a longtime supporter of WHSAD’s students and programs. Incoming WHSAD Freshmen at the Summer Bridge Program 2015
A group of incoming freshmen students attended WHSAD’s first summer bridge program, which ran from July 1st to August 3rd, 2015. The program was divided into two areas of focus; design/architecture and literacy skills workshops. The students enjoyed activities such as, translating physical objects into isometric views on paper, building physical concept models that incorporates measurements and scale, and an introduction to computer-generated drafting using AutoCAD 3D. Students also went on a sketching/walking tour in the Williamsburg area, where they sketched famous architectural buildings such as the historic Williamsburgh Savings Bank building, and saw New York City from the site of the old Domino’s Sugar Factory. … [Read more...]
