Lisa Bloodgood, Director of Advocacy & Education at Newtown Creek Alliance

March 9, 2021 By Mekhi Brown

Recently, on February 24, 2021, WHSAD announced that we won the DOE Sustainability grant with Newtown Creek Alliance, a community-based organization. For those who are unfamiliar with Newtown Creek Alliance, this organization’s mission is to restore, reveal, and revitalize community health, water quality, habitat, access, and vibrant commerce along Newtown Creek. This grant will help WHSAD beautify the Van Arsdale campus building perimeter by adding a lot more greenery. Newtown Creek Alliance, or NCA, works to “Reveal” by conducting tours that educate the public about the history of the waterway at Newtown Creek. NCA “Restores” the Creek by supporting green infrastructure investments, bioremediation, and habitat restoration, just to name a … [Read more...]

In the following article, WHSAD students, past and present share their experiences in the ACE Mentorship Program. During my sophomore year up until senior I transitioned over to team 6 working with Gensler Architecture firm.    ACE has given me a different perspective of architecture and introduced me to a new field of design, which is … [Read more...]

Gregory Rogers Presents The Future of Architectural Visualization and Unreal Engine

March 1, 2021 By Mekhi Brown

Earlier today, some of WHSAD’s students were treated with a visually intriguing and communicative presentation, to say the least. Gregory Rogers, the head architectural visualization specialist of Reo Creative Consultancy, presented in Google Meet about The Future of Architectural Visualization and Unreal Engine. Ultimately, this presentation exposed us WHSAD students to various new 3D rendering and modeling programs. This topic is imperative for WHSAD students interested in pursuing careers in architecture and design as they will definitely need to be fluent in 3D modeling considering that they are bound to work with it in the not so distant future. By using some of his own creative work, Greg focused his presentation on not only the … [Read more...]

Senior, Dimitri Brown, Participates in Co-Op Tech Electrical Program

February 19, 2021 By Christopher Koestner

My experience in Coop Tech`s electrical program has been challenging. With the shift to online learning, it has been difficult for me to complete assignments on time since I have to balance work and school. Also, because I am more of a visual learner, it takes longer to grasp information. Despite this, I have learned a lot from my teacher, Mr. Guerrero. One thing that I have learned so far in his class is the difference between a series and a parallel circuit. A series circuit is a single wiring path that allows for electrical current to flow. The number of each component in the circuit equals the total voltage. In other words, the voltage is being shared between the components. Examples of components in the circuit include doorbells … [Read more...]

2020 Alumna, Chandler Mclaurin, Talks with the WHSAD Makerspace Students

February 13, 2021 By Christopher Koestner

When our former students visit, WHSAD staff and students enjoy both a sentimental and an inspirational experience. Especially for those students who graduated in 2020, their visits to our Friday Makerspace Meets provides a sense of closure that usually accompanies the pomp of senior events such as prom, senior trip, and graduation. Hearing from Chandler, all of us felt a bit more hopeful about what the future has to offer and how said future is within our own control. Recounting her experiences at WHSAD, discussing the rigorous curricula Temple University has to offer, and simply being her confident and articulate self, Chandler brought her positive energy to this week's alumni session. Below is the video of Chandler's presentation and … [Read more...]

My Brother’s Keeper Mentors Talk Financial Literacy

February 11, 2021 By Kole McLaurin

My Brother’s Keeper is an after-school program for young men that helps prepare them for their adult lives. With meetings every Friday, students gain useful knowledge from mentors on  a multitude of topics. One particular topic that I’ve been able to learn about is financial literacy. Financial literacy is an important aspect of any adult’s life because without it, you’d likely have an abundance of money problems. Not paying back bank loans and not paying your credit card bills are irresponsible actions that could be avoided by being financially literate. These actions negatively affect your credit, which helps banks determine how credible you are and whether they would loan you money. These are valuable lessons that I am learning, and I … [Read more...]

February 10, 2021 By Christopher Koestner

When someone speaks to peoples' passions, that person will have a captivated audience.
