Photography Club Visits “Dear New York” at Grand Central Terminal

October 23, 2025 By Christopher Koestner

Thank you to Mr. Stewart Villilo for inspiring our students to pursue their artistic passions. On view in the exhibit is Junior, Alison Sanchez' photograph of Mr. Villilo. Her interview, along with insights from fellow club member, Elizabeth Cruz, and Mr. Villilo, is below. What inspired your photo? How do you feel about having your work displayed in Grand Central Station?  Before submitting my work I looked into the artist who was preparing the exhibition. Brandon Stanton is a photographer who places a lot of importance on people who are around us everyday, not necessarily celebrities or extremely known people but just people who we interact and communicate with on a day to day basis. I feel like there’s so many important people … [Read more...]

“11,000 Strings” Challenges WHSAD Students

October 10, 2025 By Christopher Koestner

WHSAD Junior reporter, Alison Sanchez, wrote this narrative. An accompanying narrative from WHSAD Junior, Mia Brito, follows. On Friday, October 3rd, Junior English teacher and select students attended '11,000 Strings' at Park Avenue Armory, a long term partner of WHSAD that has provided students with numerous opportunities to engage and learn about the arts and become involved with the community. This trip centered around students who play or have had some experience playing an instrument in the past due to the fact that the trip centered majorly around music and the unique use of instruments.  ‘11,000 Strings’ is a beautiful performance that experiments with various sounds and emotions. It's a piece that is made to make the … [Read more...]

WHSAD Students Reflect on Their Newtown Creek Alliance Green Roof Design Work

May 14, 2025 By Christopher Koestner

As part of last year's summer bridge program, our incoming freshman class began their work in designing a new green roof at the Newtown Creek Alliance headquarters in Greenpoint. This project immediately exposed these students to one of the many opportunities WHSAD has to offer. Over the years working with NCA, our students have designed and launched floating docks, landscaped nature walks, and cultivated a crucial partnership with an organization that aims to improve the environmental landscape of an area that has incurred tremendous damage from human activity. Acting as both stewards of sustainability and engineers of innovation, WHSAD students continue to aid Newtown Creek Alliance's mission "to restore community health, water quality, … [Read more...]

May 14, 2025 By Christopher Koestner

What have been some of your most memorable moments over the last four years at WHSAD? My most memorable moments over the last 4 years attending WHSAD had to be the friend's I've made along the way. The bonds I have made with them is something that I wouldn't trade for anything. I remember the first week of my freshman year I was sitting inside of my Architecture class and that's when I met George (GK), Robert, Oscar and Kevin, whom I considered my first few friends. Along the first week came everybody else with a simple, "Hello my name is". This was a memory where I got out of my comfort zone and socialized which made me who I am today. Another memorable moment over the last 4 years was falling in love with a sport. I remember in gym … [Read more...]

May 7, 2025 By Christopher Koestner

What have been some of your most memorable moments over the last four years at WHSAD? During my first year coming into high school, I was really nervous and didn’t know what to expect being in a new school and environment. But during that year, I realized that it was not so bad and that I had a lot of fun in freshman year, especially making drawings and architecture. In my second year, it was also fun because we had to use computers and work on apps that I’ve never used before. In my third year, I was able to work with wood, and we were able to make small coffee tables. During that big project, I had fun making my table and it turned out great even though I’ve never done wood cutting before. Lastly, this school year has been pretty fast … [Read more...]

May 5, 2025 By Christopher Koestner

What have been some of your most memorable moments over the last four years at WHSAD? All the track accolades that I have achieved these four years would definitely be moments I wouldn’t forget, such as my 100m record or specifically the 55m since it was my first one. Another moment would be the overnight trip. The overnight trip would probably be a top favorite moment of mine being here since we all were together going to colleges and playing games and all just hanging out before we all split our own ways. One final one would be before I even started going here being summer bridge program. It showed that I liked being here and I wouldn’t even be here without it. What are your plans for life after high school? My main plan would … [Read more...]

Linda Foster, Class of 2025

May 2, 2025 By Christopher Koestner

What have been some of your most memorable moments over the last four years at WHSAD? One of my most memorable experiences at WHSAD was going on school trips. Some of my favorites include Snug Harbor, Greenbelt, roller skating, and sightseeing adventures. But one moment that always makes me laugh was the time my friends and I hosted a bake sale in the cafeteria. I was in charge of handling the money, and things quickly became chaotic as students crowded around me, waving dollar bills in my face. We had baked cookies, pumpkin bread, cupcakes, and cake pops, and the staff loved our treats. We ended up raising a lot of money that day. It was hectic but fun, running up and down the stairs, selling to both students and teachers. After all … [Read more...]
