What is electricity? WHSAD students got their curiosity sparked in today's lab. By adding an electrochemical battery to a sugar and then a salt solution, they were able to tell which of the two compounds conducts electricity. Then they had to explain what about the atomic structure of ionic and covalent compounds allowed the conduction of electrons through solution. This Chemistry lesson dovetails with what the students are doing in Mr. O'Brien & Ms Moos's Building and Design class. WHSAD Students Get an Insightful Experience at Jewish Heritage museum
On Friday, January 31st, 2020 WHSAD students took a field trip to the Museum of Jewish Heritage. The Jewish Heritage Museum is a public museum with exhibits that display deep Jewish origins. The six-sided shape of the Core building and the six-tiered, slatted rooftop that rises 85 feet in the air show the events the six million Jews went through and who died in the Holocaust. LAKE COMO MEETING
On Friday, December 27th, 2019, members of the Architecture club run by club leader, Abraham Rodriguez, met up with Lake Como representative, Jon Gibbons, to discuss the further developments of the Lake Como project. Sophomore students, Mahalia Saint Eloi and William Cordova, conversed with Jon Gibbons about implementing the site plan design along the lakefront. This project started back in late 2018 due to the fact that the lake needed renovation. Since the Jersey Shore is very close to the lake the board thought it would be a great idea to organize a team that would improve the appearance of the lake so that it could be more favorable to the town's current residents and tourists. Senior, Joshua Cruz, Participates at Co-op Tech in the Welding Program
The Co-op Tech program provides students, such as Joshua Cruz, with opportunities to explore their passions. In the following narrative, the WHSAD senior, shares his experience in the welding program. I chose to go to Co-op because I wanted to do something different for my senior year. I was tired of seeing the same blue walls everyday. The class I’m taking at Co-op is the welding class. The thing I like the most about the class is that I get to work with my hands instead of sitting down and writing all day. Also I get to learn something new. Brooklyn Museum Exhibit
WHSAD Juniors went to the Brooklyn Museum to learn about Pierre Cardin, a French women's fashion designer and a pioneer in the design of high fashion for men. Ms. Moos: I took the students to the trip because the way Pierre Cardin works made me think about the education of the students here at WHSAD as architects and designers. I was worried that looking at fashion from the 60s was not going to be interesting for the students, but when I took them, I was surprised at how much they enjoyed it. It was an amazing trip. The students saw a lot of things. They all think Pierre Cardin took fashion to another level. “Third Dimension” at The Brant Foundation
This past Tuesday, a group of art-interested WHSAD students ventured to the Brant Foundation Art Study Center. The Brant Foundation, located in the East Village Manhattan, is an art museum that houses various pieces throughout the year\. Last year, we came here for the Jean Michel Basquiat exhibit. Surreal, abstract, and modern art, can be seen cascading throughout each floor level as visitors make their descent down the heart of the museum. It's quite immaculate. The history of the structure is quite rich as well, as it was originally a Con Edison building inhabited by an artist in the 1930s. Construction Skills Pre-Apprenticeship Program
In the following narrative, students at WHSAD and and 2019 graduate, Kenny Singh, share their opinions about the Construction Skills Pre-Apprenticeship Program . Kenny Singh: I am currently in an architectural window company installing gutters on high rise buildings. I got involved in the apprenticeship program because growing up I always liked working with my hands, and I always wanted to learn a valuable trade. The apprenticeship program will teach me everything I need to learn, such as welding and blue print reading. It’s a really great opportunity to be part of a union and work for the local. Lake Como Project Update
The Lake Como project is a perfect example of what WHSAD is all about: students putting their creative quirks to use. For the past year, WHSAD students have been working with the residents in the New Jersey town, Lake Como, to redesign the lakefront. The design for the lake done by our students has been picked up by the mayor of Lake Como, Kevin Higgins, and is actually going to be constructed. Right now, we're working on finalizing the plans.
