Aim: How do we classify and identify a solution of an equation?

Homework Questions:

Error Analysis: A student checked whether d = -2 is a solution of -3d + (-4) = 2, as shown.  Describe and correct the student’s error.

-3d + (-4) = 2

-3(-2) + (-4) = 2

-6 + (-4) = 2

-10 ≠ 2       X

Writing: What are the differences between an expression and an equation?  Does a mathematical expression have a solution? Explain.
