March 28, 2014- Half Day
Today we worked on some state lab Regents questions, and then watched a documentary about the hammerhead shark. Be sure to check out the episode on Netflix to learn about some of the interesting evolutionary adaptations of the hammerhead. Haven’t you always wondered why their heads are shaped like that?!
Evolutionary Adaptations of the Hammerhead Shark:
1. Agility- Head shape increases maneuverability and allows for rapid change of direction
2. Advanced olfactory system- Highly developed sense of smell
3. Navigation- Ability to detect magnetic waves released from volcanic rocks to travel exact routes over hundred of miles
4. Gender grouping- Females control reproduction by sticking together in a group. Females mate with single male at a time. Increases the fitness of the female.
