AIM: How are traits passed on from one generation to the next?

Classwork: Intro video, PowerPoint and notes, practice Regents questions

No Homework

Today we discussed ASEXUAL vs. SEXUAL reproduction.

Sexual Reproduction- Two parents. Each parent contributes a gamete, or sex cell. The offspring receives one half of their DNA from the fathers sperm, and one half of the DNA from the mothers egg. The processes of meiosis and fertilization in sexual reproduction give variety, or variation in the offspring. Meiosis is cell division that creates sex cells with a unique half of DNA. Fertilization is the joining of egg and sperm. Genetic recombination is the mixing and matching of DNA during meiosis and fertilization.

Asexual Reproduction- ONE parent. One parent produces an offspring that is genetically identical to the parent. The offspring has the same DNA and genes as the parent. Another name for asexual reproduction is cloning, and occurs by mitosis. Mitosis is cell division that creates identical cells with identical DNA.

NEW VOCAB:

Heredity- The passage of material from one generation to the next. DNA is the hereditary material.

Asexual Reproduction- reproduction when one parent produces an identical offspring

Sexual Reproduction– reproduction where two parents produce a genetically similar offspring

Trait- a characteristic or attribute of someone

Cloning- producing an identical copy

Genetic Recombination- the mixing and matching of DNA that occurs during meiosis and fertilization (sexual reproduction only)

Gene-A part of the DNA that codes for a certain trait
