Aim: What common phrases do we use with the verb tener?

Do Now: Answer the following…

1. What does “tener” mean?

2. How do you conjugate tener?

yo- tengo                                 nosotros- tenemos

tu- tienes                                  ellos- tienen

el- tiene

3. Why is tener an irregular verb?

4. Have you used the verb tener in a sentence before? How?

CLASS NOTES

How do we use tener?

– To express age

Yo tengo catorce años.

– To indicate obligation

Yo tengo que trabajar

I have to work.

– To express a desire to do something

Tengo ganas de comer chocolate.

I have the desire to eat chocolate.

(I want to eat chocolate.)

– To indicate possession

Yo tengo un telefono.

I have a phone.

– To express sensation

Tengo hambre/sed

I’m hungry/thristy.

– To say you’re in a hurry

Tengo prisa

I’m in a hurry

PRACTICE!

Translate the following sentences using the correct expression of Tener
