WHSAD Students Ask – “How Dense Is The Coca-Cola That You Drink?”

How dense is the Coca-Cola that you drink?

Recently, I challenged my students to conduct an experiment measuring the density of Coca-Cola. Liquids have the property of density (mass/volume)  just like solid objects.  In the photograph you will see 4 different liquids layered according to their densities.  The least dense at the top and the most dense at the bottom. At the top you can see rubbing alcohol with a density of 0.8g/cc, followed by extra virgin olive oil with a density of 0.9g/cc, below that is water with a density of 1g/cc and at the bottom you will find the main ingredient in Coke, corn syrup with a density of 1.4g/cc; no wonder that it fills you up at dinner…
