Saturday, May 11th, the day before Mother’s Day, students from WHSAD’s community service club, led by Ms. Spaziani, went down to the Jennings Hall Senior Citizen Housing to spend the evening with some of the residents. Additionally, the students presented flowers made from construction paper and recycled water bottles from the school.

Parent Coordinator, Lai Sin Chu, approached the community service club and asked them if they wanted to learn how to make flowers with construction paper with recycled water bottles from the school. Because Mother’s Day was only two weeks away, Ms. Spaziani, who directs the WHSAD community service club, suggested it would be a great idea to make and present the crafts to the mothers, with whom the students in Jennings Hall, with whom the students already had a relationship from past collaborations.

Ms. Chu showed the students how to make their own paper flowers and spent two Wednesdays working on various patterns and colors for a total of sixty bouquets. Along with the flowers, the students also wrote cards attached to the each flower. The flowers were then used by the center as a bouquet for a Mother’s Day brunch they were hosting.
WHSAD community service club had visited the center before on special occasions like Valentine’s Day where they had also delivered crafts. After that, WHSAD had been invited back the Jennings Hall to do another project for the seniors as both they and the students enjoyed their time. Whenever the students visit, they usually take about two hours to chat and play board games before they go. The ladies seemed to really appreciate the work done by WHSAD’s community service club and are eager to see what the students will do next.
