Last Friday, Mr. Codio and Mr. Rodriguez took a few WHSAD students to glimpse the prospects of the manufacturing world. Students learned about the multitude of possibilities that lay before them after they leave WHSAD and had opportunities to interact with some of those individuals with whom our students may someday find themselves working. A trip such as this one provides opportunities not only to familiarize oneself with the latest innovations and ideas of the profession but also develop social skills that will serve well in a professional context.
Below is sophomore Ariana Lowery’s narrative of the day.
On October 6th, a select group of students and I attended a networking mixer where we were able to meet program organizers, architecture and design class directors, office representatives, company owners, and investors who shared their experiences and what they currently do career-wise. This trip opened my eyes as to how many opportunities related to the architectural and design field are actually out there: from after school programs to internships. I was able to see how many branches of careers stem from just having an interest in architecture or design. These presentations showed visuals of what we could become if we just apply ourselves to our passion.

After networking, my group and I were able to choose two out of six tours of the companies located in the building. The Tech Shop, one of the companies we went to, was dedicated to providing a location where students can come and work on special projects. For such creative pursuits, students use tools involving welding, 3D printing, CNC machines such as laser engravers and water pressure cutters, and AutoCAD and Rhino programs. On our second tour, we went to a factory where they recycle and repurpose printers and ink cartridges.
