AIM: How can we use coin flips to model half-life?

Today we concluded our mini-unit on the nucleus with the second day of the half-life experiment.  We used pennies to model the random mode of nuclear decay (see yesterday’s post).  Today we finished analyzing the data.  Most people found that the mathematical model (i.e. losing half of our coins to decay each time) was fairly close to their results.  A few people got very different results.  After all, it is random!

Remember to complete the last page of the lab report for homework, due tomorrow.

Tomorrow we begin to look at electrons!  Meet in the laboratory (Room 506).

Cheers!
