Quick Guide to Financial Aid Terms

Attention Seniors, You should have completed your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) application.  You will soon receive your Student Aid Report with your Expected Family Contribution.  Your prospective colleges will receive your FAFSA information as well and mail you a Financial Aid Award Letter.  It is important that you read the letter carefully.  Below is a guide on key terms and understanding the letters.  There is no universal format, so if you have any questions please don't hesitate to call me at 718-388-1260 x3311. Understanding Your Financial Aid Letter

Dear Seniors, Many of you have started to receive your college acceptance letters and financial aid packages.  It is important that you read the financial aid letters very carefully as some of the money you are awarded is "free money" (see scholarships and grants) and some of the money will need to be paid back (see loans).  This article from Jessica Velasco's site (http://jlvcollegecounseling.com/2016/03/12/scholarship-saturday-march-12-2016/) does a great job outlining how to read your letters. Live Out Loud Scholarship

The LIVE OUT LOUD Educational Scholarship was created to provide financial support for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) youth who are pursuing a college degree.  Through this scholarship, LGBTQ youth can apply for funds to pay for educationally related expenses to pursue a degree from an accredited college, university, or technical/vocational program. The Brooklyn Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. is offering a college scholarship in the amount of $5,000 ($1,250 per year for four years). Qualifications: The African-American student must be a graduating high school senior from a Brooklyn/Staten Island High School and a Brooklyn/Staten Island resident.
