How has it been adapting to WHSAD? How different was it from last year? Adapting to WHSAD was a little tricky at first because it's been so long since I've been in an environment with so many people I didn't know, but now I feel a lot more comfortable here. This year has been different from last year because we are in person full time, obviously, but also because I have to completely readapt to new people, rather than just the same people I had known for the past two years. How do you feel about this environment? How has the experience with students and teachers been? I really like the environment here because there are so many people interested in different things, and the teachers here are always trying … [Read more...]

Student Profile, Chelsea Garcia
How has it been adapting to high-school so far? How's it different from middle school? I feel as though I have adapted quite easily to high-school despite the many changes. One main difference for me was there not being any homeroom, which was such a strange concept to me after all the years of having a homeroom. How do you feel about the environment? How has your experience with students and teachers been? I personally love the environment at WHSAD because there are resources, experiences, creativity, and a community. But despite everyone participating in extraordinary things, people always treat others as equal. Everybody that I have come in contact with at this school- and I cannot stress this enough- has always … [Read more...]

How has it been adapting to WHSAD? How different was it from last year? I am new to both WHSAD and to New York so everything has been different from last year, including the environment and the teaching ways, but WHSAD has made it very easy for me to adapt to the change. How do you feel about this environment? How has the experience with students and teachers been? I have always wanted to live in New York because I loved how fun it looked on the internet. I also knew the education system is better, and everything is more accessible, so for me this environment is new in a good way. I like all the teachers, they're all very helpful and make it very easy for me to catch up to the things I haven't learned before. The students … [Read more...]
WHSAD Senior, Jeffry Niola, in Co-op Tech and Construction Skills
Before I knew anything about Co-op Tech, most of my family had a construction business and still do. My dad has been a big role model to me, and he has shown me all the skills and basics of construction, such as electrical, carpentry, plumbing, roofing, tile installation, plastering, installing dry/green boards, otherwise known as sheet rock, painting, floor sanding, and sheet metal. I thank him a lot for showing me these skills because it’ll help me in the future, not only for a job, but that I’m well experienced and familiar with the job I’m going to do. Now this is where Co-op Tech comes in. During my junior year, I got selected for the Construction Trades program at Co-op Tech. It was the greatest opportunity for me because I have a … [Read more...]

1. What have you learned so far in your work in the Makerspace? In the Makerspace so far I’ve learned how to speak up more. I’ve been able to work on my presentation & communication skills. For example, with our Vacant Lot presentation slides I’ve been having to contribute my part and showing what I’ve done to our supervisors. This requires speaking up and explaining what exactly I did. That alone has helped me so much with my communication skills. 2. Based on what you have done so far, what do you think is your greatest strength and why? At this point where I am in Makerspace my greatest strength I would say is my determination to work. When I’m assigned something, I take my time to make sure it’s good enough to be … [Read more...]

1. What have you learned so far in your work in the Makerspace? During my time in the Makerspace program I have learned how to develop my teamwork skills. Usually I would prefer to work on my own but the maker space program has taught me to trust my coworkers. When I have worked with my coworkers Megan and Yamilet, they have added to my ideas and it ended up being something great. 2. Based on what you have done so far, what do you think is your greatest strength and why? I think my greatest strength has to be patience. It has not been easy to work with so many people. Sometimes people aren’t always there physically; therefore, they don’t know what’s going on. For example, one time I was trying to get in touch with one … [Read more...]

1. What have you learned so far in your work in the Makerspace? That it is not as easy as you would think when it comes to working alone. The tasks given can pile and quickly become overwhelming for you if you happen to ever so slightly loosen your grip on the handle. An example of this would be working on a presentation solo but still having individual tasks to complete. It is important to remember that teammates are essential to your project and provide the security needed to move forward with your project with little to no setbacks. After learning the importance of having teammates, I am extremely grateful for having hard working teammates today who always step up to the plate for me and deliver quality work. 2. Based on what you … [Read more...]

1. What have you learned so far in your work in the Makerspace? What I learned so far in my work in the Makerspace is that you have to collaborate with your teams to know who does what part. Everyone should be involved and should know when there is new information so that they can talk about it together. Inside me there are great ideas about how we can make a place better. Even with the small time we have together as a team, we can come out with a quick sketch or idea that we will later elaborate on. At the moment what I'm in charge of is the Lake Como project to find out the cost of the materials we are going to use like traffic cameras, traffic lights and the shipping of those items. I also learned based on all the meetings I … [Read more...]
Gilver Bueno, Senior in WHSAD’s Work, Learn, Grow Makerspace Program
1. What have you learned so far in your work in the Makerspace? I've learned that to be a good worker you must not only go in depth on the topic that is presented to you as a task but you must also go above and beyond the goals or desires of your superiors. In order to achieve success, you need to do more than the standard. 2. Based on what you have done so far, what do you think is your greatest strength and why? My greatest strength is probably organization and presenting the information that I've discovered in an understandable way. Mostly because you could have perfectly helpful and reliable info, but if someone doesn't understand it, then it's pointless. 3. What skill would you like to develop over the remainder of the … [Read more...]

1. What have you learned so far in your work in the Makerspace? As an employee working for WHSAD Makerspace, I learned how important it is to work in groups. Working in groups allows you to communicate, generate ideas, and build relationships with fellow employees. I also learned that planning is important because it keeps you on track with whatever project you're working on. Currently my group and I have developed a slide presentation of “The Information Kiosk”. The presentation includes our ideas and plans for the kiosk. By having this it keeps us on track with everything because we will need to refer to those slides when designing a potential kiosk for Snug Harbor. 2. Based on what you have done so far, what do you think is your … [Read more...]
