The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation’s Summer Internship Program connects graduating college-attending or college-bound undergraduate students to a wide range of work opportunities with businesses within the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Over the course of an 8-week session, students will be connected to Yard-based businesses and departments according to their future career interests, skillsets and educational background.

BNYDC’s Internship Program participants are exposed to real world work experiences, provided professional and career advisement, and opportunities to network with peers and a variety of business owners and industry leaders within the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Eligibility

Must be:

  • A NYC Resident or attend a NYC-based college
  • A college-bound or college- attending undergraduate student
  • Students must be able to present documentation that indicates they meet the above criteria.
  • If under 18, working papers must be provided. Working papers can be obtained from your school.

Program Outline:

  • Interns are matched by BNYDC with a Navy Yard-based business or BNYDC department. These will include manufacturing, design, media, and technology-based businesses. Host businesses and BNY departments will provide each student with a meaningful work experience, and intern placements are made based on alignment between business needs and prospective interns’ skills, background, and interests.
  • Specific intern roles include:
    • Culinary/Hospitality
    • Media/Communications
    • Engineering
    • Computer Programming/Development
    • Office/Administrative
    • Various other fields
  • Interns are expected to demonstrate exceptional work ethic and professionalism at all times while being employed by BNYDC. Before the start of the program all students must attend a BNYDC orientation session. At the end of the program, employers will submit an intern evaluation.
  • Two sessions are available to accepted interns. Each accepted student is eligible to participate in one session.
    • Session 1: Monday, June 4, 2018 to Friday, July 27, 2018
    • Session Two:  Monday, June 25, 2018 to Friday, August 17, 2018 (graduating high school seniors from public schools will have a late start on June 27, 2018 since their classes end the previous day)
  • In addition to their work at their internship sites, interns are invited to participate in additional career preparation and networking programming that will include 1-2 industry-based tours, networking events, and career panels.
  • All interns commit to a 40-hour work week with a one-hour unpaid lunch break each day. This totals to 35 paid hours each week. All interns are compensated at $13/hr.
  • Apply:
  •  Interns are selected based on their demonstration of strong communication skills, work ethic, and track record of commitment and achievement.
  • Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. The deadline for all applications is Monday, April 2, 2018.
  • Limited internships are available, so applications should be sent in as soon as possible. Applicants accepted earlier in the process will have greater likelihood of matching to an internship role in their desired field(s).
  • To apply:
    • Complete the application form and a resume, and send both summerinternship@bnydc.org.  If needed, you may also mail your application and resume to Summer Internship Program, Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation, Unit 300, and Brooklyn, NY 11205.

Once your application is received, we will reach out to you via email to schedule an interview.

We look forward to hearing from you! Please email any questions to summerinternship@bnydc.org.
