We are coming to the end of our Wood Joinery unit. We have practiced and learned to work with hand tools and created several wood joints. We are still working on our last stabilizing element. The wood joinery structure you created are like a detail of a timber framework.

Vocabulary and Terminology
Stock: The raw material out of which something is made.
Square: A T-shaped or L-shaped instrument for drawing or testing right angles
Waste: material which can be disregarded
Miter Box: any of various fixed or adjustable guides for a saw in making miters or cross cuts, esp. a box with slots in each side to guide the saw in making angular cuts.
Back saw: a handsaw that is stiffened by metal reinforcement along the upper edge
C-clamp – a clamp in the shape of the letter C
clamp, clinch – a device (generally used by carpenters) that holds things firmly together
Level: An instrument for ascertaining whether a surface is horizontal, vertical, or at a 45° angle
Framework: a supporting structure: a structural frame
Timber: Wood that has been pre-cut and is ready for use in construction.
Joinery is a part of woodworking that involves joining together pieces of wood, to produce more complex items. Some wood joints employ fasteners, bindings, or adhesives, while others use only wood elements.
Procedure to make a Lap Joint
1.Measure and mark using try square
2.Cut along line using miter box and back saw
3.Take out waste using chisel and mallet
4.Smoothen area with rasp and file
5. Test and adjust when needed
Procedure to make a Mortise and Tenon joint
1.Check if stock is square
2. Mark and measure using try square and marking gauge.
3. Cut waste using back saw or copping saw
4. Use file or chisel to clean tenon
5. Test using try square.
Fastener: A fastener is a hardware device that mechanically joins or affixes two or more objects together.
Planning: is developing an idea before it is executed, and the steps necessary to fabricate a solution.
Extrude is to take a shape and pull it out into depth.
