According to its website, New Lab “serve[s] entrepreneurs who are defining the future of technology and human experience.” It could be said that many WHSAD students, because of the innovative nature of their studies and the unique path on which many find themselves, could become those entrepreneurs. Therefore, the trip to New Lab this past week illustrated what the future may entail. A creative think space at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, New Lab provides an environment for the flow of creative ideas. WHSAD students reveled in the diversity of the spaces at the location and the capacity of these spaces to cultivate the dreams of dreamers. Below, Antonio Perez shares what he and some of his peers thought of New Lab.
Going to the Brooklyn Navy Yard for the BQX Conference and prototype reveal was a real awakening into the world of business. I was able to learn the steps it takes to create a project like this, how it unites a community, and the effort it takes to get a project like this from paper to on the streets and running. This resourceful meeting took place in New Lab, which has an amazing historical background. In the past, this factory made parts that would, eventually, assemble a boat. Due to the fact that this was a factory, there are still structures that hold history. For example, the cranes and conveyor belts that brought parts from one side of the factory to the other still remain and give the building a more rustic design. Because of the rustic and very industrial design of the building, the space was meant to contrast that.
The numerous work-spaces, lounges, meeting rooms, cafes, and offices were very playful and colorful and were populated by a lot of plant life. Although the space has exceptionally good design aspects to it, the space is used in a diligent, interesting way. The second floor holds multiple spaces such as a relaxation area that was very inviting. There was a work-space that had a team of designers, 3-D models of historical landmarks and other buildings, inspirational mood boards along the walls, and an overall overwhelming burst of creativity. All of these spaces enclosed in this area hold a group of people together that are focused on a common goal: to work together and unite to build a better future.
