WHSAD Seniors Celebrate National College Decision Day
Over 50 seniors attended WHSAD's 2nd Annual College (& Career) Decision Day Party on Monday, May 1st. Students got to share their post-secondary plans, celebrate their accomplishments, and support their fellow classmates as they venture forth into the next phase of their lives while enjoying some ice cream and cake. WHSAD Seniors Present Y-PLAN Projects to Panel of Civic Partners
On Wednesday, April 5, four WHSAD seniors were invited to present their Y-PLAN projects at 4 World Trade Center to Y-PLAN’s panel of civic partners. Of more than twenty schools, WHSAD received the only invitation to present and to provide constructive feedback on the Y-PLAN program to an audience that included various New York City agencies. The students participated in a panel discussion on their experiences and offered insight on how the program could evolve and improve in the future. Among the distinguished attendees of the conference was Superintendent Karen Watts, Deputy Chancellor Phil Weinberg, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Director Ron Ashford, and their respective offices. WHSAD Seniors Visit The Park Avenue Armory to See The Hairy Ape
On Wednesday April 5th, Mr. Powers, Mr. Felix and the seniors at WHSAD were on their way to The Park Avenue Armory to see Eugene O'Neill's The Hairy Ape. A week prior to the show, 30 seniors were prepped for the experience by two professional teaching artists Vicki Turner and Neil Pritchard. In this pre-show gathering, the teaching artists prepped the students by letting them freely discuss the ideas of class, social structures, and the belonging that we feel as a part of any group. The students explored these essential "hairy ape" concepts by reading lines from the play, proposing possibilities of what the concept of the play could be about, and engaging in improvisation activities. WHSAD 9th Graders Take a Walking Tour of Rockefeller Center

WHSAD Seniors Clean Up Apollo Street with Newtown Creek Alliance
On Saturday, April 1, 2017, WHSAD seniors joined the Newtown Creek Alliance in their weekend street cleanup project on Apollo Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The students picked up and organized garbage into trash and recyclable items. Students were eager to help improve the environmental conditions of WHSAD’s community. The Newtown Creek Alliance is a community-based organization working to restore, reveal and revitalize Newtown Creek to its glory days as a local wildlife habitat. WHSAD 10th Graders Visit Edgar Allen Poe’s Cottage in the Bronx
On Wednesday, March 29th, Mr. Koestner's 10th grade English class went to Edgar Allen Poe's Cottage in the Bronx. The visit was the culmination of a unit on Edgar Allen Poe, where students read and discussed many of Poe's short stories in Mr. Koestner's class. WHSAD Students Voted During the Participatory Budgeting Vote Week
On Monday, March 27th, WHSAD students took part in casting their Participatory Budgeting votes. Using laptops and their phones students went online, located their city council district, and voted for up to five projects. These projects were proposed by members of the community that they believed would help improve the neighborhoods they live in. Voting is taking place in Social Studies classes all week long. WHSAD Seniors Participate in a Y-PLAN Project Creating Presentation Boards
On Sunday, March 19 WHSAD’s Y-PLAN students joined Council member Stephen Levin's (33rd District) Participatory Budgeting Committees in putting together presentation boards for the Participatory Budgeting Project Expo. The students assisted the teams in creating the posters for 6 projects that the community will vote on during the last week of March. The students are excited to have a hand in helping to change the communities that they live and go to school in.
