The Architecture Club at WHSAD is going to be working with the BQX Project, which is a plan within New York City to build a light-rail system connecting Brooklyn and Queens. To Begin, Ya-Ting Liu visited the school and introduced the students in the architecture club to the BQX Project and explained what their role will be. The students are going to be split into two teams, Design and Site Analysis. The Design team is led by WHSAD junior Zeal Patel, who has experience in this area, and they will focus on the design of a station that is planned to be located in the Williamsburg/Greenpoint neighborhoods. WHSAD Students attend the Future In Focus: Exploring College and Careers Fair
17 Juniors and Sophomores from WHSAD attended the Future In Focus: Exploring College and Careers Fair on Thursday, March 9th 2017. The fair provided our students with information into the world of college and careers. The all day session included presentations on an array of post-secondary opportunities and the benefits of work in organized labor, including apprenticeship programs. Our students met with members of several construction and building trade unions. WHSAD Students Visit Gensler Architecture Firm to Begin Bushwick Hotel Project
On March 3rd, WHSAD students visited Gensler Architecture Firm in Brooklyn to learn about a new project that will allow students to gain real world experience collaborating with real architects. This project involves students designing the lobby of the Bushwick Hotel. While at Gensler, students met with Anne-Sophie Hall, a lead architect at the firm. Ms. Hall introduced students to other projects that the firm is currently working on and took the students on a tour of the offices. The 2016-17 school year marks the second year in a row that WHSAD students have worked with the Gensler Architecture Firm. Summer Internship Applications Available!
Applications are now available for the 2017 WHSAD Summer Internship Program! There are approximately 30 positions available at various sites across New York City with companies and organizations related to architecture, engineering, design, construction, preservation, etc. Sophomores and Juniors, who are 16 by May 15th, are eligible to apply this year. WHSAD Honor Students Visit The Cliffs Rock Climbing Gym at LIC
As part of the WHSAD honor student incentive program, students at WHSAD were given the opportunity to attend a field trip to The Cliffs rock climbing gym at Long Island City. On Friday, February 10th, Students from all grades with a 90 average or higher attended this trip to test their rock climbing skills. The incentive field trips act as a way to encourage students to strive academically in each class. They also give students an opportunity to try new things and broaden their horizons. Many of the students who attended the rock climbing trip had never gone to a climbing gym before so this was a new experience for them. WHSAD Students visit St. Francis College to See Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor Speak
On February 2nd, WHSAD Students who have done exceptionally well in their social studies classes were selected to see a conversation with Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor at St. Francis College. This conversation was a part of the Thomas J. Volpe Lecture Series. She discussed topics ranging from her own life story growing up in New York City, to the stresses of figuring out what to do after college. She also discussed her career as a lawyer and a judge leading up to her nomination and appointment to the Supreme Court. She often drew from her experiences and education to send a message of hope and determination in order to encourage students to push themselves and achieve their goals. WHSAD Students Visit Gruzen Samton Architecture Firm by Completing a Job Shadow
On January 27, students from WHSAD visited Gruzen Samton, an architectural firm, on Wall Street where senior architecture teacher, Mr. Codio, used to work. There, students shadowed employees at the firm to grasp what it means to work at an architecture firm. While the students shadowed the employees, they were able to glean a great deal of information from what they observed. Students were able to talk with Susan Wright, the head designer at Gruzen Samton. She taught them about the process of getting clients and keeping them. Then she showed the students how the plans for a building are started and the different types of floor plans for it. WHSAD Students Creating Plaques for Learning Partners Program Employees
On January 13th, WHSAD students conducted a site visit at the Learning Partners Program to discuss final plaque production designs for LPP employees. Autumn Gonzalez, a WHSAD senior, discussed installation of plaques for the employees for their workspaces, while other WHSAD students displayed and discussed the different plaque designs with LPP employees. The Learning Partners Program is designed to "promote inter-school collaborative learning and leverage the rich reservoir of expertise that already resides within our school communities to improve the educational experience for all New York City students." WHSAD Can Drive a Success With the Help of HEALTH for Youths
WHSAD kicked off 2017 with its first community service project. On January 18, 2017 WHSAD students and SKILLS USA members delivered over 400 cans of food to City Harvest’s collection site at Engine 229 Ladder 146 on Richardson Street in Greenpoint/Williamsburg, Brooklyn. WHSAD students and their families generously donated all of these canned goods. A special thanks to Heather Butts of H.E.A.L.T.H for YOUTHS for working with our students and SKILLS USA members to assist in the collection and drop off of the cans.
