On October 18th, a group of students from WHSAD attended the Teen Design Fair, which is part of National Design Week in New York City. As they entered the large makeshift tent set up of the grounds of the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, they observed various round tables that were hosted by design professionals. Our students went around to the tables and spoke with designers from the fields of architecture, interior design, product design, fashion design, landscape design and many more. Students got real world advice on career paths, challenges which designers face, and how to go about breaking into the specific areas of design which were represented. … [Read more...]
WHSAD Students Partner With French Volunteers to Perform Restoration Work at Greenwood Cemetery
Proof that France’s generosity to the U.S. didn’t end with independence or the Statue of Liberty was found in Brooklyn’s historic Green-Wood Cemetery this past Wednesday when volunteers from the renowned preservationist organization Union REMPART braved a mid-summer sun to clean and treat the “Angel of Music,” a striking bronze sculpture that marks the tomb of Louis Moreau Gottschalk, the U.S.’s first internationally famous composer and one of Green-Wood’s most venerable interments. While the preservationists took a short break, Arturo Juarez and Alexis Rojo, students from Williamsburg High School of Architecture — partnered with Preservation Volunteers — passed high-pressure sprayers all over the Angel. Preservation in Practice Series
Adaptive reuse has been a way preservationists have been able to maintain historic sites throughout New York City while giving them an exciting new purpose. One case study WHSAD students have looked at over the course of the last few weeks is the TWA Flight Center at John F. Kennedy International Airport. Designed by world-famous architect Eero Saarinen, The TWA Flight Center opened in 1962 as the original terminal for Trans World Airlines at Idlewild Airport (now JFK). It is a prime example of the forward-thinking modern architecture that was in vogue in the 1960s. Both the interior and the exterior of the Flight Center were declared a New York City Landmark in 1994. In 2005, the terminal was listed on the National … [Read more...]

Each student received a certification of completion to the intro of woodworking … [Read more...]
